I suppose you have to be a bit crazy to open an independent bookshop at a time when all the others are going out of business but the people who opened Chapter One have put their craziness to good use. What they have created is a bookshop-cum-café in a gorgeous, light-filled space which is furnished in a whimsical mix of styles that gets your imaginative juices flowing. This is one café where you don’t need to bring your own reading material – you just order your refreshments, pick something from the shelves while you wait, settle into a favourite chair and lose yourself for a while. And there’s a fountain that tinkles pleasingly in the background.
Or else it’s a bookshop, where the goods are presented in such an imaginative way that they all seem intriguing and irresistible. You could come here for pancakes to eat in and end up with a book to take out.
Either way, this is a place I would recommend for those who like to browse books in a leisurely fashion but who appreciate a few helpful suggestions from a very well-read staff. These come in the form of visual presentation, knowledgeable labeling and, of course, conversation.
