My friends have all been raving about Federal, an Antipodean (from Australia or New Zealand) cafe in the city centre. A couple of weeks ago I finally got my act together and paid a visit to see what all the fuss was about. My first impression was of the long queue outside, which is now unavoidable on a weekend, though in the end we were seated within 15 minutes.
The menu offers a range of breakfasts, all day brunches and sandwiches. I had the ‘halloumi and shrooms’ with avocado (known here as ‘avo’) on sourdough, which was delicious (and enormous). Other brunch options include veggie breakfast bagel and eggs benedict, in addition to a changing specials board.
The coffee was also good, with a range of options including Pourover and Aeropress. Plus, they offer Milo, an Australian favourite, which is chocolate milk that’s served hot or cold. The focus of this place is clearly on good quality food and drink, and, combined with the friendly atmosphere, that makes for a pretty perfect brunch spot. It is definitely worth the hype.
