I first tried the food at Northern Soul in the summer, and it is really good, very fattening but that is exactly what grilled cheese should be.
The place is on a market stall, and has been able to expand since then to include a bit of proper seating. It’s got a real temporary, ad-hoc, relaxed vibe, constructed from press-board, oil drums and cheese grater lighting. Good music plays loudly, it’s a fun place to watch the world go by in a busy corner of the city.
Now confession time, I recently started on a really restrictive diet, I don’t eat bread or dairy any more. This means the only thing I can eat is their red cabbage coleslaw which is aces. But all of this pretty much makes it a place I no longer go to. But I do pass often, and the feelings of craving are strong.
One piece of advice when you are visiting on my behalf: do try and avoid traditional lunch times as queues are long and slow moving, but this is a sign of good food and friendly service.
