Pollen is the newest addition to the high-end bread scene in Manchester. This recently opened bakery has quickly made a name for itself, and both sells to The French, one of the city’s fanciest eateries, as well as more low-key foodie establishments.
This sourdough & Viennoiserie bakery is in a unit under the arches of Piccadilly, and it’s already drawing in the crowds. On a Saturday morning the queue quickly builds up, but trust me when I say it’s worth the wait. These Danish pastries are to die for. On offer is a mouthwatering array of croissants, pain au raisin and even the famous cruffin. For those, like me, who aren’t in the know, a cruffin is a pastry made of croissant dough, rolled up and baked in muffin tins, filled with a flavoured pastry cream or curd (yum!).
Though these sweet offerings are tempting, my personal favourites are the delectable sourdough cheese toasties. On Saturday mornings, the Coffee Cranks coop, which serves good ethical coffee from a bicycle unit, is outside, making this a great place to pick up breakfast while in town.
