This bio-natural restaurant is in the inner court of a modern building just opposite the Navigli. It is a great place to go to if you are curious to discover what vegan food is, i.e. the food with no meat, no fish, no egg, no cheese, no milk … you would imagine you can only have salad but believe me, it’s an entire new world of ingredients and tastes to explore. Not only tofu and seitan but also hummus, wakame, kamut, soya, cereals and many others.

I suggest to try Mudra for lunch and to get the menu degustazione (sampling menu): for just € 9.00 (€ 15.00 for dinner) you have a single dish with 1st and 2nd course + side order. Also the aperitivo is a nice experience: you can order your glass of biological wine or beer and peck from the buffet but if you want to try something different, you can get a 20 minutes ayurvedic massage with it (€ 18.00 instead of € 8.00)

At the 1st floor there are often courses (dance, massage, yoga…).

Afer 21:30 you need to press the entry phone to get in the inner court.

Ok I must admint that “navigli”, is probably the most touristic area in town. Probably because, especially in summer, the atmosphere here is very relaxed and the water adds the “holiday feeling”. However if you follow my simple tips you’ll have the chance to experience one of the most romantic parts of the city.

Navigli in Milan is the name for canal. Originally it was built to connect Milan with the lakes and with Switzerland.

The are two main Navigli: Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese: they are both nice but it depends on what you are looking for.

Naviglio Grande is more on the bohemian side. There are many restaurants, cafes and second hand shops. Here, each last Sunday of the month, a big Antiques Market is held (Mercatone Naviglio Grande). You’ll find furniture, items for the home, old books, jewelry etc. In my opinion is perfect for a pleasant walk on a Sunday morning in spring/autumn or to have a drink in the afternoon.

In Naviglio Pavese (just beside the other Naviglio) the atmosphere is younger. I recommend to come here at night in autumn or in winter, for a romantic walk. Unless you are looking for a party atmosphere, then come here on a Saturday night for a drink or two.

This pastry shop was opened in Milano in 1936 and in the years it’s become very well known by Milanese people thanks to the excellent quality of its products. They are specialised in homemade sweets and they offer a great choice of different typical Italian cakes, pastries, candies and chocolates. Needless to say ingredients are always fresh and I am sure you will immediately taste it if you treat yourself to something.

In the shop there is also a tea room to spend some time inside. The style belongs to early XX century, with classical furniture, fancy table clothes and elegant cutlery. With the warm season they you can also seat outside: on sunny days there are a lot of people sitting quietly and enjoy their food and drinks.

Personally, I love their croissant: jam, cream, honey, chocolate, empty or whatever, the pastry is so good and fresh! Very often, on Saturday or Sunday late mornings I wake up with this craving for these croissant and I feel lucky my apartment is only one minute walking from the shop!

Rotonda della Besana is one of the most charming and uncommon places I have seen in Milano. Basically, it is a public garden surrounded by a “flower” shaped porch, with a deconsecrated church in the middle.

It was built at the beginning of the XVIII Century to be a church with its graveyard. Afterwards it’s been devoted to many different purposes and now the church hosts exhibitions and cultural events and the garden around is a public green area.

This place gives a peaceful and protecting feeling because of its perfect symmetry and balanced geometry. Once you’re inside it’s like time stops and all the chaotic sounds of the city are left outside.

If you’re in Porta Romana take some time to stop here and try to catch the beauty of the place with your camera or check which exhibit is on because usually they are really interesting and well cared.

If you’re looking for: a charming spot, an intimate atmosphere, a green corner, a relaxing moment, this is the place you want to go to.

Vivaio Riva is a little and old garden in the very centre of Milano. It’s in a crowded area but most of the people don’t know about it. And that’s why it’s so special. You can buy plants and flowers, or you can just have a look around, sit on a bench, have a chat with the two ladies who spent their lives after it. If you go there in spring or summer you’ll be wrapped into natural scents and perfumes. During the cold months you can warm up a little in the greenhouse.

At the entrance a beautiful old tree full of small moving mirrors and tiny lights welcomes you. You can pretend to be either in Pollyanna or in The secret garden. Up to you!

Milano is not famous for having big green areas. It is nice, though, that sometimes you just need to turn your head and you can find an unexpected green spot. Even if it’s quite well known, that’s what happened to me when I first saw Gardens of Guastalla. It is like a little corner of Paris has been put on Milano.

This park is very small but also elegant and agreeable. It used to be a private garden of a college when it was created, in 1555. Afterwards, in 1939, it was made public and now it’s property of the municipality of Milano. It’s placed between the public university, an old hospital and the biggest synagogue of the city.

If in fall and winter is a little gloomy and desolated, in spring and summer it can be very crowded and lively, with young people hanging out, kids playing and old people having a stroll.

If you’re tired of walking or of being on streets full of cars, I think this is a good spot to have a rest.

Since I ran by chance into the website I have been having a longing for going to this place. Yesterday night I was in the mood for having a nice dinner out and I asked a friend of mine to come with me. We took our bikes and cycled for 20 minutes. The evening was warm so the climate was perfect.

Well, believe me, when I arrived I thought this is one of the best place I have ever been to!

The style is a mix between Scandinavian and Parisian: a very accurate choice of furniture elements from the fifties or sixties combined with countryside pieces, like old wood chairs or little tables. There are small basil plants on the tables and juta bags hanging on the walls.

You can eat outside or inside and you can be right beside the bocci court. The dishes you find on the menu are typical from the region Liguria (north of Italy on the seaside): we had breaded fish, a vegetable soup and lamb with potatoes. Plus a hot apple pie.

After a liter of red wine, we decided to play with the bocce. I didn’t win but was happy anyway!

Near P.ta Venezia, in a former cinema, there is this tiny public library on 2 levels: on the ground floor there is a corner where you can sit and read newspapers and magazines (take TuttoMilano, a weekly what’s on guide with a couple of pages in English), an area with travel guides, another with CDs and movies and another for the kids.

On the first floor there are some tables where you can sit and study, listen to music or simply relax. There are also a couple of PCs with Internet connection (but you have to book them in advance by registering at the desk) and an area with equipment for blind readers.

It is not so easy to find a place to sit because it’s always crowded with university students that have elected it as an ideal spot for studying alone or together (they are all very silent, only the staff is noisy), so I usually go there either very early or after work.

It’s a charming environment and I personally think that it’s worth a visit, not only for the library in itself, but also because it’s in a crossroad of tiny streets with some of the most beautiful Art Nuveau buildings in Milan. Take via Malpighi and you’ll find Casa Guazzoni, decorated with putti (statues representing joyful babies), walk further on and you’ll see Casa Galimberti with painted walls representing beautiful women with grapes and fruits.

If you want to experience Milan by bike but haven’t got one, then Bikemi is perfect for you. In the centre of Milan there are lot’s of Bikemi stations, where you can rent a yellow bike not only for a long period, but also for a week or a day.

You only need a credit card (a pre-paid cards are not accepted) and then you can register either via mobile, internet (www.bikemi.it) or phone, by calling the green number 800 80 81 81.

If you are in Duomo, Cardorna, Loreto, Centrale FS or Garibaldi you can head to the ATM point inside the tube station and fill in the registration form there.

This service is very cheap: 2.5 Euros per day (6 per week). The first 30 minutes of use are free, each additional 30 minutes slot costs 50 cents, but if you return the bike within the first 30 minutes, wait 10 minutes, and dial the codes again, then you never pay for any additional slot.

I love to go by bike in Milan, especially in the parks, but since the traffic is so heavy (and the drivers so respectless) I suggest to start using your bike on a Sunday, when the city is completely empty: people from Milan tend to spend the weekend either in the mountains or at the see. Then when you are familiar with bike paths and Italian drivers, you’ll be ready to bike all over the world

Milan is famous for its Navigli. When you mention these artificial canals, mostly built between 12th and 16th century, you immediately think about nightlife, because all along Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese you can find bars, pubs, restaurants and trattorie.

When I moved to Milan five years ago I discovered that for those who live here, Navigli also means riding a bicycle on a sunny weekend, and taking a relaxing walk out with kids and family. Naviglio Grande or Pavese are too far from my home and too busy so I chose another one: Naviglio della Martesana

Naviglio della Martesana is one of the most peaceful canals in Milan. They say that it was partly designed by Leonardo da Vinci. When I go walking along this Naviglio in the city I really feel relaxed. The best thing to do is to take the underground, get off at the stop “Turro”, and head to the canal.

I regularly go to an amazing Greek restaurant, Myknos, just on the riversides, where I can experience a real taberna atmosphere. Close to the riversides there are also tiny veg gardens, a country touch in the center of Milan, while on the water I like spotting birds and enjoying the silence, so close to the busy viale Monza!
