Especially during springtime, before the super-humid summer heat captivates Milan, the re-qualified Darsena waterfront is a nice spot to sit down, have a rest and enjoy the sun. Even better so after popping into Il Forno dei Navigli beforehand to grab one of their baked delicacies.
Maybe the best bakery in town, this little corner shop is a real must-go. Already looking at the window display from the outside provides mouth-watering eye candies. Once inside, the choice is as hard as it can be. Savoury pizza slices, crunchy bread sticks, little filled pastries, yummy fruit tartlets and puff pastries to name but a few – all of them are taste explosions, hand-made to perfection with a special eye to use only the best and freshest ingredients. Only early birds will be lucky enough to get one (or two) of the best brioches for a typical Milanese breakfast (coffee and brioche), they are always sold out in no time.
Not to forget the bread selection. As a Nordic import to Milan it took me quite some time to find a place to source my beloved black, wholegrain bread. Voilà, Il Forno dei Navigli is the life safer for expats from up North looking for something else than white bread. Tastes like back home.
To cut a long story short: Whenever looking for comfort food and flavour miracles, there’s no better place in the Navigli area. Definitely not to be missed! Especially before Christmas, to treat yourself to their delicious Milanese Panettone cake.
