Mobile city

How Mobile Technology Will Increase Sustainability.

Summer travels often bring us closer to our computers and smart phones, from booking the flight to finding the perfect spot.  In addition to convenience, Internet and mobile technology will dramatically reduce paper and printing waste in urban environments. All printed outdoor media, flyer’s and posters will be a thing of the past.  Billboards, posters and flyer’s will be replaced with a digital interface.  Like an computer or TV screen adds and information in the built landscape will become digital, updated and replaced by satellite or wifi. No paper, ink, labor and transportation costs. Furthermore, our mobile phones will interact with the digital add space.

Interaction:

When I walk into retail shop I have the opportunity to ‘bump’ my smart phone on the shops digital menu / add space. This bump will give me a geo / price locator and any promotional info that’s up to date. Depending on my privacy settings, I may involve my personal brand agent to navigate my selections.  A similar experience will happen in Clubs and Restaurants. Reservations and party updates will happen by the slide of my finger across my smart phone.  Mobile technology is also integrating augmented reality. Basically this means that I can see extra 3D information be viewing a ‘marked’ sign though the lens of my smart phone.

Less Waste More Info:

With mobile technology we will see a dramatic reduction in paper waste in the city and therefore less chemicals dissolving into our water and land. Thousands of kilometers will also not be driven to replace printed media helping reduce our carbon outputs. Lets hope that this waste reduction isn’t overwhelmingly counterbalanced by an increase in mobile technology junk. So instead of flyer’s rotting away on the sidewalk we might be tripping over trashed mobile phones and viewing devices.
