One of my favourite rooftop spots in Munich, located right inside the main building of Technische Universität München. Just perfect to take a sundowner drink and watch the view over the roofs of the city. The terrace has a south/west orientation – so you can enjoy sunlight until sunset. Breakfast, lunch and snacks are served, and the barista loves to create the perfect crema on your cappuccino and is your man to mix even the most creative drinks of your delight.

PRETTY CENTRAL. Its location in the center of Maxvorstadt district is very close to the gallery/museum-area Königsplatz, Lenbachhaus and Pinakotheken, and easily to reach in a 15 minute walk from the city center.

GORGEOUS VIEW. Enjoy a great view over the nearby art temples and the city center roofs with the Bavarian Alps in the background (around 50km south of Munich). For sunny evenings before the holidays they sometimes play live music, which is announced on their Facebook page.

HOW TO GET THERE?! The cafeteria is not really easy to find, but this is how you’ll find the right way: After entering the main entrance of “Technische Universität München” –> simply walk left and follow the directory Vorhoelzer Forum, inside the huge university building. For all those without sportive ambitions > I strongly recommend you use the elevator, which ends at the 5th floor right inside the cafeteria.

OPEN TODAY? I’d recommend to check the Facebook page, as sometimes the cafeteria is closed, when the forum is booked for university events.

UNTIL AUGUST 8, 2013: For 3 months, the balcony on Cornelius bridge is transformed into the most lively beach spot in town. Even when the number of bars & terraces upon the green river is still very few in Munich “by law”, this spot has an exceptional position on the most central one of all Isar bridges.

KULTURSTRAND: Beach, bar, free concerts, DJs, chillout. Your individual beach – it plays no role whether you’re just enjoying the peace of the park-like area, or you’re coming for small concerts and enjoying some open-air drinks: Drop your shoes in the sand - you arrived in an urban oasis! With their afternoon family programme, even kids (and their parents) are very welcome. And a perfect place to meet friends and start into nightlife: This spot is just a few hundred meters away from bar&cafe magnet “Glockenbachviertel”.

EVERY YEAR SINCE 2006: in early 2010, city council gave the green light for this project to be held in the future too. A massive campaign of Munich beach supporters via social media was formed – successfully. Finally, after months of clashes with authorities and city council (like every year…) – the local urbanism group “Urbanauten” got the official “GO” for the future of beach project “Kulturstrand” , after 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. When beach bars along the river or in the centre are the “norm” in metropolitan cities such as Berlin or Hamburg – Munich is slowly but surely catching up…

Since many years my favorite spot for late & salty snacks in the nightlife-area around Gärtnerplatz: Bergwolf Currywurst-Corner.

OBSESSED. One night from Saturday to Sunday: The waiting queue reaches until out of the entrance door. The crowd meeting here is eating & drinking on the stopover between bar # 3 and bar # 4. Hundreds of people a night order Currywurst & fries here. Indie music is playing in the background, and people are sitting inside, visible for the people rising the subway-stairs like in a shop window.

IMPORTED. Honestly spoken: Munich is not really famous for Currywurst-tradition as Berlin or the Ruhrgebiet is. But lots of people move to Munich every year, from all parts of Germany. One of these people found out that this city had no place to get the typical Currywurst “Ruhrgebiet“-style. That’s the reason why he finally opened Bergwolf some years ago.

DON’T FORGET: Imagine – One night you come by around Gärtnerplatz area, and hungry for fast food? > Don’t hesitate ->Just target Bergwolf -> “Guten Appetit”!

Bergwolf can easily be reached via the subway lines U1/U2 (stop: Fraunhoferstrasse) – it is located directly upon the stairs of the subway exit.

MUNICH IS ITALY’S MOST NORTHERN CITY, people say here. Maybe this comes from the locals’ love to sit outside on the terrace, whether in summer or winter. And they love italian restaurants. The Bavarese is a tribute to Italian food, with a Bavarian touch. The menu contains pizza, pasta and italian sweets; as well as solid Bavarian meals as Schweinebraten (roast pork) and Fleischpflanzerl (bavarian meat balls).

LITTLE ITALY AROUND THE SLAUGHTERHOUSES: The Bavarese is located in the so called “Schlachthofviertel”-area, which became “hip” the last years. Where Ehrengut street and Dreimühlen street are crossing, a new cafe-, bar-and gastro-centre has grown. 2 Italian restaurants, a pastry cafe plus an indie music bar bring life onto the street terraces, from morning hours until night

BAVARESE PICNIC SUPPORT: With their Italian / Bavarian kitchen team the Bavarese is also an ideal supplier for picnic in the green. They offer two packages for a delicious picnic to take away – for example on the near idyllic Isar banks only 300 metres away. Arrivederci & Servus!

This is the in-house tavern of the oldest Munich brewery. Augustiner is the true no. 1 beer of the Munich locals, and here you’ll find the whole variety of the local traditional meals.

BAVARIAN KITCHEN: From white sausages via roasted chicken until a crispy half knuckle of pork – Here you can get every typical Bavarian meal you’ve ever heard of. The in-house butchery guarantees a high quality of meat!

ATMOSPHERE: In my opinion this spot is no beer temple with too many tourists. Moreover, it’s always the right mix of Munich residents and international visitors, eg. from the near hostel.

ROOF-TOP terrace: Newly opened in 2010, the house offers open air beer garden atmosphere on top of the building in the 2nd floor! Ideally for hot summer days…

DON’T FORGET (If it’s your first visit to Bavaria): Try the daily fresh white sausages (pork) with a pretzel, sweet mustard and a fresh tapped wheat beer! Probably there is no meal more traditional and popular than this.

HOW TO REACH: Right around the corner of the big Oktoberfest area (which usually starts in late September for 2 weeks) the Augustiner Bräustüberl is easy to reach: After leaving Tram 18 or 19 (Stop: Holzapfelstraße), there are only 50 m left to walk along the big street
