I bet you all know the clichés of posh Munich. Welcome to Tumult and the complete opposite of all those clichés.
A friend of mine described this bar to me by saying, if there will ever be a revolution in Munich (again), it would start from there. That was enough to convince me to go check it out. We went, had some beer, had some schnapps and played some kicker (Kicker, derived from English, is the “German” expression for foosball table, which is “English” and is German – weird). Anyway, most of all we were happy to be in a place far off the Munich mainstream.
Their slogan is “Welcome to Munich’s underground” and this is true in two ways. They are the only place I know in the Maxvorstadt area that plays music like punk rock, rock’n’roll, ska and rockabilly, and to enter you literally have to go underground. After some narrow stairs you come into a room with dim red light, sticky floors, loud music and a very special atmosphere. The wooden bar chairs and benches with their ridiculous leopard and zebra print covers and the tattoo inspired wall decoration fit the audience: different, but nice in their own way. The crowd in Tumult is like a big family, but very welcoming to newcomers and guests.
So far no revolution has happened. And as long as Tumult exists there is no need for one.
