As much as I love Munich, I always have this feeling of homesickness for places I’ve lived before. Most of the time, I compensate by eating the respective country or region’s food. In the specific case of Lisbon, finding Portuguese food, wine and beer is pretty hard in regular stores – if not impossible.
“Mitte Meer” is a wholesale supermarket selling Mediterranean and Iberian food to local restaurants. Situated right behind Ostbahnhof in a warehouse (right next to where all the tacky nightclubs are) this place is by no means fancy – it’s the opposite of fancy actually. Don’t be fooled by that, because food-wise this place is fantastic. If canned seafood, chouriço, ham and great cheese are your kind of thing, you’re going to love Mitte Meer. The wine section makes up like half of the store alone and offers a great selection of (mostly Spanish) wines. Just comparing prices for lower priced (5-10 Euro) wines on the Internet, “Mitte Meer” is actually a bit cheaper. They also have fresh fish, which I have yet to try (saving the best for last…).
So go there, but don’t go hungry, it might not end well!
