This is a bar that takes its job very seriously. The dimly lit atmosphere provides a nice ambiance, while the large book-like menu speaks for itself.  

With more than 140 different cocktails to choose from it may take several minutes to decide what to sample first. Even with such extensive options everything is perfectly prepared and expertly mixed by hand. Many of the drinks have also received awards from a variety of competitions.

The menu has recently been updated to include many prize winners from the past year. My current favorite is the Mojito Parfait with lavender creme and essence of orange blossom. The mixologist told me it came to him in a dream and it definitely tastes like it. 

For those who don’t drink alcohol there are also a variety of specially mixed juice cocktails, so everyone can join in on the fun. Negroni also serves popcorn free of charge for something salty along side some of the sweeter cocktails.

Be sure to arrive early on the weekend, or call ahead to reserve a table. 

It’s also important to note credit cards are not accepted, however those with a European EC card may use it to pay once their bill reaches € 30, which isn’t difficult to achieve, considering drinks average € 8 each.

Take any central line S-bahn or Tram 15 / 25 to Roseheimerplatz exiting towards Steinstraße.

This place is an institution and to me, with its 1960s interiors and all kind of artefacts on the wall, the mother of all “Berlin-like” bars in Munich – and probably also of the ones in Berlin.

Being a proper cocktail bar there is a great selection of cocktails and other alcoholic drinks but also wines. I like the fact that they were already serving Sushi when it wasn’t trendy yet and couldn’t be bought at every street corner like nowadays. This circumstance may explain why the food might be a bit overpriced and not up to the standards of a Japanese restaurant. However, it is still good but probably more considered a snack.

There is no sign that would indicate what the place is called and you have to ring a bell to get in. As the bell doesn’t make a sound but is only a flashing light bulb you may have to wait briefly and try again in case the bar keeper is not behind the bar. But I think it is worth the wait as it feels a bit like entering a different world.

It usually isn’t as busy as it was in the old days but there is still a certain magic to it. Once a month it gets quite crowded when a local band around the musician Titus Waldenfels plays a kind of mix between German folk music and bits of chanson and jazz. If you want a table then you better book.

What an ambiance! Visitors of Haus der Kunst, a big temple of contemporary art in Munich, mostly don’t recognize this bar at the backside. Around the corner, river surfers ride up and down the Eisbach wave (check out the article), and on the back side of the art temple a fabulous bar enriches the evening:

FABULOUS DRINKS. The ambitious bar team creates really excellent drinks - from about 30 nonalcoholic fruity drinks to standards as Whisky Sour to monthly special theme drinks as the Saki based “Samurai Drinks”: A growing number of my friends and even gastro journalists claim to find the best drinks in town here.

DAY CAFE. GORGEOUS TERRACE. Goldene Bar is open daily from 10:00, and has a daily changing lunch menu. When temperatures allow it, tables and chairs are on the huge Haus der Kunst palace terrace.

THURSDAY HIDEOUT. Get on the decks: Every Thursday from 20:00 different Munich DJs play sophisticated and eclectic music which brings interesting vibes into the palace-style golden barroom. Standard on other days are mostly decent electronic beats.

NEIGHBORHOOD: SURFERS & CELEBRITIES. Indeed – a very interesting mix of neighboring individuals: A permanent active community of river surfers on the east side, and Munich’s legendary celebrity club P1  (with probably the toughest doormen in town) in the west side of the building. But guests of Goldene Bar don’t need to dive into this society trouble so they can easily enjoy a great bar!
