It’s not easy to open a typical Greek restaurant and not to be a typical Greek restaurant. In Munich two kinds of Greek restaurants do exist. The party Greek like Molos, Cavos and so on, which are expensive and noisy. Or the traditional Greek, like Georgios (I like very much), with a simple interior, but very good food.
Ela Re seems to be like none of those categories, but it extracts the essence of the best of both. It’s interior is fresh and modern. The outside area is big, but cannot hide its Greek roots. Lots of small white wooden tables and chairs stand in a row next to the wall on the pavement, in between small olive trees trying to offer some shade. It was the first time I had seen a burger on the menu of a Greek restaurant. I had a lamb burger with some very good homemade fries. But also vegetarians do not have to starve. Try the vegetable Souvlaki skewer.
For me Westend is one of the nicest parts in Munich and that’s not because it’s located next to Oktoberfest. Life seems to take place on the outside, in the parks, in front of the Bars and on the pavement. I love it.
My conclusion: buy a Spritz with Skinos (kind of resinous liquor), toast with your friends and shout out “Ooopa!”
