I bet the majority of locals in Munich don’t know this spot. I also think you would never guess that this quiet place is only 20 metres away from probably the most crowded place in Munich during the Advent season: the Marienplatz Christmas market.
Every year the huge Christmas tree on Marienplatz is sponsored by a different town which also gets to run the mulled wine stall in the Town Hall’s yard. Usually you get very good quality mulled wine there as presumably every town wants to leave a good impression.
I love this spot because the Christmas market can get incredibly busy, especially at the weekends. In the yard, however, there is plenty of space, you can catch your breath and there are even a few craft stalls too. You can enter the yard through the gate underneath the Glockenspiel or from Weinstrasse.
A little extra if you are using the front gate: as you walk through it there is a little post office on the left, which is run by an angel. If children post their wish list letters to the Christ child (who is responsible for the Christmas presents in Bavaria) before 11 December they will get a reply before Christmas – no matter where in Europe they live. The post office is open daily from 12:00 to 18:00.
