This café and restaurant is a great place to enjoy the vibe of the city. I especially like to come in the morning for the first coffee of the day and watch the city slowly awake.
If you’re sitting on the terrace you not only have a great view to Marienplatz, you are actually on Marienplatz. Located next to city hall, you can’t find a more central place to go for coffee and cake. And that is what you should do. They are also a restaurant and offer soups, salads and a variety of local and international mains, but the thing they are best at are sweets. (The lunch menu is quite a good deal for the city center though.)
The family-run Woerner’s exists since 1865, and in that time they mastered the art of confectionery. Right now they have three locations, the most famous one at Marienplatz, one close to Sendlinger Tor (Herzog-Wilhelm-Straße 29), where they also produce their own ice-cream, and one in Herzogspitalstraße 9, where they make all their cakes, tortes and pralines.
There are so many choices; everyone with a sweet tooth will find something enjoyable here. If you come too early in the morning to indulge in all the sweetness (if that’s possible), have one of their breakfast options – Bavarian, German, French, English or American – and get the sweets to take away.
If Marienplatz gets too crowded “escape” to the second floor and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere away from the busy life downstairs.
