Last fall, a really beautiful little ceramics studio opened up just two blocks down from where I live. BKLYN Clay is both a studio for already skilled ceramic artists and also a place where beginners and advanced learners alike can take classes! This past winter I decided to sign up for one of their 3-month-long beginner wheels courses. I had taken one pottery class in college but did not remember very much from it and I had never tried making anything on a wheel before.
The class was every Monday for 3 hours and we learned all of the basics of how to make an object on the wheel, and then had the freedom to make whatever we wanted. Also, while you are signed up for a class, you can come in during studio hours and work on things on your own time. It was a really humbling learning experience: making a useful and aesthetically pleasing piece of pottery is much more challenging than it looks.
They offer a variety of classes for all different skill levels. You can sign up for a 3 month long course or come on Friday nights when they offer a “tryday” where you can come in for 2 hours and just get a feel for what it’s like to work on a wheel. They also offer memberships to artists who need studio and kiln space! I will say it is not a cheap hobby but it is absolutely worthwhile if you are looking to learn something new.
