Remember in the movie You’ve Got Mail starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan where they run into each other at a coffee shop? No? Well, I didn’t see it either, but this is where they filmed the scene and over 15 years later, Cafe Lalo pride themselves on it.
Cafe Lalo on the Upper West Side of Manhattan is something straight out of a romantic comedy. The Parisian-like cafe’s very romantic thanks to the floor to ceiling windows facing the quiet street and the Christmas lights in the trees brightening up the park benches outside. On summer nights, the front windows open up to where it almost turns into a sidewalk cafe. Wintry days, it’s like being inside a snow globe. It’s definitely one of those places you would take a date after dinner or a movie.
Upon entering there’s an endless display of every dessert imaginable: cannolis, cheesecakes, pies, tarts and chocolate anything! The cappuccinos and espressos are decadent and comes with a mini Toblerone on the side. Everything’s fresh, the pies are warm and jazz music plays softly in the background. I’ve even come on a late Saturday night to find a Spanish guitarist playing in the corner. The atmosphere is so dreamy.
It can get a bit crowded on a Saturday night because how tight the tables are placed, but the desserts are too scrumptious for me to even care. Eat guilt-free and take a romantic stroll afterward. The tree-lined streets in the neighborhood add to the charm.
