When I was about 15, my – quite older – 23 year old cousins took me to Cafe Wha? to introduce me to the city. A better introduction could not have been had, since Cafe Wha? is just the perfect sampler of what NYC is about. It’s a tiny, jam packed, live music “bar” located in the heart of whats known as the (Greenwich) Village.
With its dynamic engaging atmosphere, and melting pot of faces, races, styles, and personalities, Cafe Wha? is surprisingly inviting! Every night you can catch a stellar performance that will bring you to your feet and JUMP; doing creative version covers of every genre from Janis Joplin, Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, Madonna, and everything in between – EXCEPT Justin Bieber! Luckily his gems will not be heard.
In fact, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springsteen, The Velvet Underground, Cat Mother & the All Night Newsboys, Peter, Paul & Mary, Woody Allen, Lenny Bruce, Joan Rivers, Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, and many others all began their careers at the Wha? The house band rocks it out to a different theme Wednesday to Sunday.
Cafe Wha? transforms a room full of people who might be grumpy financial analysts during the day into smiling dance machines. Yes the drinks might have something to do with it, but mostly it’s the way the band can transmit the music and their powerhouse voices right soaring through your blood stream and into your soul.
