Drunk Shakespeare – The Bard under the influence

Living in New York City, locals tend to see a lot of performances, shows and musicals based on Shakespeare’s work. But Drunk Shakespeare goes where theater has never gone before…actors drinking copious amounts of alcohol while performing and reciting Shakespeare!

Drunk Shakespeare is situated inside of The Lounge, a vintage mid-century decorated room lined with classic books inside the Roy Arias Studios in Times Square. It looks more like the inside of a sophisticated personal library than a place where debauchery ensues. The moment you walk in, there’s a shot waiting and you just know you’re in for a fun time.

Drunk Shakespeare encourages drinking (there’s also a bar inside The Lounge) and audience participation. One actor is challenged to quote Shakespeare under the influence, but it’s also not being able to tell if half the show is staged or improvised that makes the entire show hysterical and incredibly entertaining. It’s hard to determine which play will be performed until showtime, but the “anything can happen” atmosphere is why Drunk Shakespeare is the most lively and unpredictable theater experience on The Great White Way.

Note that only those 21 years old and over are allowed to attend since that is the legal drinking age here in the US.
