If you want to find a local dive bar with very reasonably priced drinks, Freddy’s is the place for you. This Brooklyn staple has been around for nearly 9 decades, going through many transformations over the years. Before it found its newest home in South Slope, Freddy’s was located where you can now find the Barclay’s Center. When the news came that Freddy’s was going to be torn down, local customers chained themselves to the bar in protest. This chain can now be found on the new bar, along with much of the same interior as the old location, including TVs that play one of the owners weird video art on a continuous loop.
What makes Freddy’s even more special is that it has a backroom dedicated to live events with everything from local concerts, performance art, poetry readings, and even karaoke! One of my favorite events is every first Wednesday of the month there is a story telling show called So What Happened Was… where people get up and tell real stories about something that happened to them in the past week. I always find the stories to be relatable and a refreshing approach to connect with people around you in a new and interesting way.
