I’m hesitant to recommend a speakeasy. They were cool during Prohibition, when they were actually illegal. The concept has now been done so many times and each new bar is almost always a bad cliché. But Larry Lawrence is different. The Williamsburg bar isn’t trying to be a speakeasy. It just happens to be located through a nondescript door that leads to a long, nondescript hallway. At the other end is an underrated bar that’s actually nice, perhaps because it’s hard to find.
Come before 23:00 and you’re likely to get a seat at the bar or one of the tables on the perimeter of the huge, lofty room. Part of the unique design is a glass-enclosed indoor/outdoor smoking area overlooking the bar, so you don’t have to go all the way back out to the street to have a smoke.
Swing by early for the happy hour, daily from 18:00 – 20:00, for US$ 1 off everything from beer to wine and cocktails.
