Unlike a lot of Americans, I usually like my breakfast sweet instead of savory. A good bagel (check the Absolute Bagels article) can hit the spot, and sometimes that boozy brunch is just what the hangover ordered, but give me a decent cup of coffee and tasty pastry, and I’m ready to start the day.
In Chinatown there are tons of great little bakeries, but only a few have captured my heart, including New Kam Hing who has mastered the art of sponge cake. Sponge cake for breakfast you say? That’s what I said too before I took my first bite. It’s light, fluffy, and still warm. Plus, they have several flavors from green tea to coconut. Dip a piece in your cup of coffee for maximum enjoyment.
I always grab mine to go, which usually means devouring it right outside the shop on the bustling block. After that little shot of sugar perfection, I’m ready to wander down Canal Street and deal with the big crowds.
