The Garment district is located in midtown, between Broadway and 7th avenue from about 27th street to 40th street.
Here visitors often pass by without glancing at the tall brick, Art Deco, buildings lining the streets that lead to Times Square. Usually on a mission to see just that – Times Square. Well these buildings hold the showrooms and design rooms of some of the world’s leading designers and retailers. In this part of town, fashion is the Sheriff and only the most up to date fashionistas can recognize the design world celebrities as they rush in and out of their service cars.
The secretive world of fashion doesn’t invite all, however, their sample sales do. If you venture out off of the Avenues, and walk along the streets instead (especially 36 – 39th) you will find loads of showroom windows. Only some of these will have that long awaited sign “SAMPLE SALE”. For you shop-a-holics out there, you have just hit the jack pot.
Of course in NYC you should not make this a destination, but should you be walking along and you see this lovely sculpture of Singer sitting behind his machine (inventor of the modern sewing machine) with his huge button and needle. There is the info counter with lists of all the sales around, so head in – be aware, you are in fashion country where sample sales run wild!
While you’re in the fashion mood, check out the beautiful exhibits right next door at famed Parson’s School of Design!
