Warning: if you are a book lover, Strand Bookstore will suck you in. Do not go if you are on a time schedule because you can easily be in there for hours!
Strand is an independent bookstore located within steps from the Union Square area and boasts 18 miles of books. Even walking in to the actual store is a challenge because they display a block’s worth of discount books in bins at the side of the store. You can get a $1 used book to pass the time with on the subway or a trendy canvas tote bag to carry them all back home.
The staff is extremely knowledgeable. There has never been a time when I inquired about a random book title and they weren’t able to point me in the right direction without having to look it up first.
Check the calendar on their site. Strand hosts book signings in their rare book room (a space on the top floor of the store that displays rare limited editions). For just the price of the book, you can witness a reading from your favorite literary author to an A-list celebrity signing who just published their memoir.
Tip for some book-loving New York City fun: go on a scavenger hunt and seek out the Strand kiosks in Central Park and Times Square.
