Norway remains one of the few countries where university education is essentially free. It should come as no surprise then that students flock from all over the world to study here in Oslo. This diverse student population and a vibrant university culture come together and find expression in a large, brutalist concrete building near Majorstua called Chateau Neuf.
Home to the Norwegian Student Union, Chateau Neuf is a true staple of university life in the capital. With an auditorium, library, multiple bars, a club space, and much more, it’s overwhelming in all that it offers. Not a student? No problem. Locals and travelers alike are invited to enjoy it all. After exploring downtown, make your way over to to play trivia with students, relax with a coffee in the book cafe, or join new friends for a drink out on the beer garden-like patio.
As great as all that is, however, Chateau Neuf really secures its place as a central hub of student activity with its wonderful program of events. Since the beginning of the academic year the large concrete block has already offered performances of “West Side Story,” a small-audience show with indie musician Erlend Øye, and a talk by the one and only Noam Chomsky. Not bad.
Though it isn’t necessary to be a member to visit Chateau Neuf or attend events like these, buying a membership can be worth it as the savings quickly exceed the NOK 200 cost.
