Even if not located in the city, but rather in the what I call ‘mini village’ of Bæreums verk, reachable by bus from Oslo (check Trafikanten for info on how to get there), the Dutch pancake house has been one of those perfect places to end a cold skiing winter day. You can go cross-country skiing around the area at Sandvika, which is really close to Bærums Verk.
The Bæreums verk in the winter is like a fairy tale place, full of lights and decorations. I was in a good mood from the second I stepped off the bus. Then there is the warmth inside the restaurant, plus the multitude of little things with Dutch motifs and history all over the walls or on the tables or on the shelves. It was fascinating to look at them, especially when we were joined by some Dutch friends who can explain a bit more than what meets the eye.
The food was another incredible experience for me. The pancakes are really huge and are served with whatever filling is on the menu. Until then, pancakes were only a dessert for me. Sweet, to be eaten with jam. There, at Pancake House, I ate pancakes with ham and cheese and mushrooms and something else. The sweet Dutch syrup goes surprisingly well with the salty stuff.
