Grab your diver’s bell (the one behind the bar is not for customer use) and delve into the fathoms of Underwater Pub. Show up around 20:30 on a Tuesday or 21:30 on a Thursday and you may just find yourself submersed in a deep blue C – for that’s when singers from the Norwegian Opera and students from the Academy of Opera step up on shoal and belt out songs for free to the resident sub aquatic fauna.
For decades, Underwater Pub has provided a stage for established opera talents and others still wet behind the ears. In that time, it doesn’t seem to have changed its tune a bit.
When you enter Underwater Pub you are immediately presented with the choice of heading down towards greater depths or up to shallower waters. Walls and ceilings are painted in a murky bluish-green (the bartender I asked called it peacock green) to add to the aquatic illusion. The seabed is brown and wet, depending on the number of spilled drinks.
Underwater Pub actually lets you bring your own (sea)food. At the bar, you’ll find a selection of menus for nearby food options. Choose something from one of the menus, order and pay the bartender and Spongebob’s your uncle; they’ll place the order for you and bring it to your table, so you can relax and enjoy a magical, musical evening.
