“Nothing equals the joy of the drinker, except the joy of the wine in being drunk.”

Author: John Lee (CultureMee Co-founder)

We love this French proverb which underlines how people here in Paris appreciate the daily indulgence of a good glass of (French!) wine! And why wouldn’t they, with some of the best wine in the world on their doorsteps.

Dee and I paid a visit to the quiet, rural, wine-making villages of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé a few years ago and will never forget our trip there drinking some of the world’s best white wine. Considering Sancerre is only 2.5 hours south of Paris, any wine lovers looking for a day trip will most definitely enjoy it.

If you don’t make it to Sancerre, fear not, Paris has more than enough excellent French wine to keep your wine palate satisfied.

This does serve as a good reminder about how important good food and wine is to the French, so rule number 1 if you are dining out with French people is to make sure to get the locals to pick or at least taste the wine.

I remember one example a few years ago where a friend picked and tasted the wine, only for all of the French people on the table to indicate it was corked! A serious cultural faux-pas.

This example goes to the heart of why we started CultureMee, our free app which helps you embrace culture, including the local cuisine and dining etiquette, when travelling abroad.

So what is CultureMee?

High level, we help you unlock the local culture, including basic do’s and don’ts, dining etiquette and business culture (useful when negotiating in the local markets!).

We also provide lots of handy travel advice for typical traveller frustrations such as visas, vaccinations and plugs.

We recently launched a video platform, which will put you in the driving seat to give your own perspective on culture.

For anyone still hungry for more, we’ve got plenty of fun facts you keep you entertained. Did you know the unibrow is considered a highly attractive feature in women in Tajikistan?

Join us on our journey to help bring culture to the world, one traveller at a time.
