In a city known for its beer scene, Earth Bread + Brewery is one of my favorites. A comfy neighborhood spot bustling with families in daytime and hipsters after 20:00, Earth offers artisanal brews in an eco-friendly atmosphere.
Its wood-fired pizza is topped with house-made mozzarella. Traditional toppings and oddball combinations (like pho or pancetta and fig) highlight the “flatbread” menu, while creative salads and homemade ice cream round out its food offerings.
I recommend the seed pizza if you like garlic. And meat eaters are raving about the Hot Nashville Chicken pizza.
Co-owner Tom Baker (award-winning brewer, formerly of Heavyweight Brewing) has created the perfect laboratory to experiment with small batches of eclectic and ambitious beers, from sours and cask-aged ales, to meads and herbal lagers. I can’t tell you my favorites because he rarely repeats himself. The friendly staff will let you sample anything before you commit.
Beyond the numerous taps dedicated to his and other regional beers, you’ll find an impressive draft and bottled wine selection. Earth makes a delicious soda and brews its own kombucha.
The restaurant is stylishly furnished with recycled furniture and fixtures, with communal bar tables made from reclaimed wood. Everything from the art on its walls to the veggies in its salads are locally sourced. The kitchen staff composts and recycles liberally. Earth is a perfect gateway to its progressive Mt. Airy neighborhood, a short ride from downtown. With some of the city’s best pizza and beer, it is worth the trip.
