Like burgers or pizza, tacos are a beloved cultural icon in America. It can be challenging to find a person who feels anything but love for the myriad of taco options we have access to. However, I find it easy to encounter mediocre tacos in this over-saturated market. Heffe, the newest taco joint in Fishtown is outstanding when it comes to their food. “Tacos That Don’t Suck”, Heffe’s slogan, describes my exact experience every time I come. Heffe’s tacos aren’t just good, they’re sensational.
The ingredient combinations executed by Heffe’s kitchen mix traditional with creative to devise some truly explosive flavors. Ideal for sharing, the Tijuana Poutine is a mountain of waffle fries, queso Americano, cilantro, pickled jalapeños, and Mexican chili, topped off with an over easy egg. My favorite tacos are the Kraken, which consists of tender fried octopus, chimichurri, spicy tomato jam, and queso fresco; and the Lengua taco, calves tongue, ancho raisin puree, cabbage, and lime crema. Tacos come two per order with onion, radish, and cilantro.
Other items on the menu that “Don’t Suck” are the Fat Man burrito and the Chili. The burrito is made up of crispy chicken, queso American, bacon, rice and beans. The chili is a savory mixture of beef & chorizo, black beans, cilantro, and queso fresco.
As a walk up window, Heffe offers plenty of outdoor seating, and a portion of the property is covered and heated for adverse weather. Heffe is cash only, but has an ATM on site.
