Quaker City Coffee is one of Philly’s newest social justice-minded companies (see also EAT Cafe, The Monkey and The Elephant). As a social worker, I love this trend. I go to cafes all the time, and creating a successful social enterprise taps into the human condition in a truly creative way.
The mission of Quaker City Coffee is job creation for returning citizens; otherwise known as those who have been previously incarcerated. One of the most pressing challenges these individuals face is finding an employer who will look past their criminal record. Without a living wage, how can one be expected to rise out of cyclical poverty or illicit activities? In Philly, it’s illegal to perform a background check before someone is hired, but the offer can be rescinded after it brings up a record. Intentionally hiring returning citizens (in everything from HR to billing and sales) ensures for these individuals a more stable life and chance at a fresh start.
Come to Quaker City Coffee for the latte art and minimalist space just as you would any other thoughtfully designed cafe. Come for the verdant back patio, and the locally roasted coffee. Stay to plan the social revolution.
