Avenida da Boavista is one of the most well known avenues in Porto, but the reason I cherish it with all my heart is not because of its size (it’s more than 5 km long, which makes it the biggest one in Porto), the fact that it passes right by the city’s park or even that it goes until the ocean. What makes me love it is the different kinds of architecture we find there.
At the beginning of the avenue there’s the most modern style of Casa da Música, but as you go down the houses get richer and richer right up to the ocean. There are some houses that are remarkable because they are so big and beautiful and so well preserved. Another spot that is relevant is the building that’s Vodafone’s headquarters in Porto. Even though it’s not unanimously acclaimed it matches Casa da Música where modernity is concerned.
If you love architecture I think you will love this street as much as I do, because there’s a little bit of everything: you’ve got modernity, you’ve got well preserved XVIII and XIX century style buildings, you can observe a lot of different designs of our traditional tiles, there are even a couple of statues of contemporary art on the way… And when you’re tired you’re near Serralves or Porto’s City Park. What more can someone want?
