Coming to Porto and not going to a Port Wine Cellar is like going to Rome and not taking a glimpse of the Vatican or the Coliseum.
OK, you can argue it’s a touristic program, but it is one probably all Porto-residents have done, and it is absolutely unmissable.
Most people would think that Port Wine is the wine “our grandparents” used to drink and this is so not the case anymore. And you’ll quickly see that when you visit Ferreira. Ferreira is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful Port Wine Cellars (along with Sandeman), and trust me, there are quite a few wine cellars in Porto. The tour is beautiful and mysterious, with an exhaustive (but interesting) explanation of the different types of Port, ending with the most wonderful Port wine tasting you can ever dream of.
Of all cellars, why Ferreira? First of all, because its name comes from Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, probably the most influential person in the history of port wine, so it is one of the most important wine cellars in Porto. Secondly, because it is absolutely stunning, so much that it has in the past won the international “Best of Wine Tourism Award”, a prize disputed amongst several wine companies all over the world.
