Every city has its traditions regarding street food, and in Portugal, especially in the North, something we just can’t live without once summer leaves the city, are the salty roasted chestnuts, that from October onwards are found everywhere downtown.

This is such a nice tradition, as I remember leaving school for lunch and just outside the fence, year after year, the same man was selling them there, also whenever we went downtown for some shopping, the smell of the chestnuts being roasted on the streets could be sensed everywhere, just like they are today. I absolutely can’t resist that delicious smell, reminding me that autumn is here.

Even though I make roasted chestnuts at home quite often, the cartons sold on the streets are way better, exactly at the perfect roasted point, very yellowish and salty, always pretty hot, perfect to indulge on a sunny but cold day, or as a way to lighten up the spirits during a grey day and as an added bonus you can warm your hands!

So whenever you hear someone shouting on the street ‘Quentes e Boas’ or ‘Quentinhas’ (common characteristics ‘good’ and ‘warm’) you’ll know that these cartons of chestnuts are for sale nearby. Don’t miss it.
