I am not a big fan of museums in that I always find that museums rarely give you a true sense of the city you are visiting. However, Serralves is not a regular museum. The modern building, projected by one of Portugal’s most important architects is outstanding and in itself worth a visit. Even though it is a typical tourist attraction, it is also a place all locals regularly visit.
In Serralves you are always sure to find great artists on show. The beautiful main building hosts several exhibitions throughout the year, and people come from over the country to see what is on show.
For me, one of the best things about Serralves though is its gardens: 18 hectares of green space, including a lake with ducks, a small forest, a garden maze, a rose garden, a citrus orchard, beautiful fountains, and a huge variety of trees and plants.
Be it winter or summer, you can spend a few hours here or a whole day, as there is a great amount of things to see and do. This is a place where time stands still, and although it is located in one of the busiest streets of Porto’s residential area, it is still a place where you breathe in fresh air.
There is also a tea house located at the end of the garden, and a museum cafeteria and a restaurant in the modern building. Every single space is worth a visit!
