For fans of electronic music, there is an event taking place every once in a while which should not be missed. Usually twice a year, the big names of the Drum’n'Bass scene arrive to Prague to perform live in front of thousands of people. Ed Rush, Aphrodite or Roni Size have all been here for a whole couple of times, but they keep coming again and again.

The event – called Let it Roll – is not always held at the same place. Since the hunger of Czech fans for quality music is huge, it is always at some sort of spacy industrial hall. Just recently, it was moved to an hall in Holešovice. The next gig is coming up on February 17th, do not miss the chance!!!

Currently, what is up, is the summer two-day open-air festival of top DnB music held about an hour’s drive from Prague. The headliners of this event are: LTJ Bukem, DJ Friction, Aphrodite as well as the liquid funk genius Netsky. The tickets cost only around 600 Czech crowns.

Now, buy the tickets, get into the right mood for dancing and let’s go enjoy a fair portion of powerful DnB music!

At first, it used to be a school. Children would spend their first two grades of elementary school there. Then, it used to be a boy-scout club. Later, it was decided that the building be torn down and replaced by a motorway. But until it is eventually destroyed, it is going to serve as a stylish and original club place, where loads of events are being held. I am talking about „Klubovna”, a club in Dejvice.

A bunch of guys and girls who have for some years been organizing a summer music festival called Povaleč have decided to establish a club where drinking meets culture. They succeeded surprisingly well. Renting the building from city of Prague, they reconstructed every inch of it with their bare hands. More and more people are coming in every day.

Concerts, festivals or theatre plays take place there quite often. Klubovna offers a wide range of drinks including draught lemonades and a vast number of quality rums. The whole spot is covered in graffiti and wall pictures so it feels a bit like a squatt inside. Come sit at the garden, listen to a concert, play chess or a game of fussball! I might meet you there at 03:00 or 04:00 as Klubovna usually closes only after there are no people left in.

One of the places to visit at Újezd is definitely Popocafépetl. There are actually five Cafés of this name in Prague (Na Struze, Italská, Melantrichova, Michalská) – this is the only one which works as a music club, though.

When you find the a bit hollow entrance and walk down the stairs to what used to be a mid-age cellar, you will immediately smell the unmistakable odour. Then you walk into the small and only mildly-lit club with an original and sort of old-school decoration and the party can begin. You can order a coffee, beer, wine or basically any cocktail you name for a very reasonable price.

Virtually every day there is a concert on. Pick yours: Fridays and Saturdays there will be a DJ playing 80′s, 90′s and dance music, live gypsy bands play Sundays, Latino Mondays and other live concerts follow the other days. Just check out the program on their website. The entry is usually free or symbolic. I would just recommend making a reservation since the small club is often very crowded.

Last but not least, Popocafepetl doesn’t basically know anything like a rigid closing-time. They just close when there are not many people left – which can be either at 02:00 or 05:00. Therefore, it’s also a great place to hang out after you’ve been kicked out from somewhere else and still feel like partying…

A cocktail bar, that offers not only plenty of well-made cocktails, but also large doses of music from local DJ`s and a rich selection of dishes. So if you feel like spending time in a vibrant atmosphere, meeting somebody without checking your watch, this is the place.

Back Doors is a pretty large place, an underground cellar, cleverly furnished and with a very well supplied bar equipped with skilled barmen. Inspired by similar clubs in the Netherlands and New York, the founders’ idea was to create a space offering everything you need for pleasant evening entertainment. And that works. As the hours go by and the glasses empty you can experience a total lack of a sense of time. But who cares? Nobody goes to Back Doors to work, except the staff.

Once upon a time, Roxy was one of the very few options in Prague for a decent evening, when I felt like some dancing. But these times are over and Roxy still lives its standards.

Opened in 1992 under the name of Roxy, and reopened in 2002, and just recently in 2010 and 2011 due to reconstruction and some bureaucratic mismatches afterwards, this place become alive again.

In 20`s and 30`s it was a shining pearl at the Old Town, full of people in its restaurant, cinema and a ballroom. After being damaged by the enormous floods (2002), the Experimental Area Roxy/NoD now offers a full variety of concerts, dance music, gallery presentations, internet café with wi-fi connection, theatre, films, performances and workshops. For some of their best gigs have a look yourself.

If you are into clubbing and are in Prague for couple days, Roxy is definitely the place to go – next to Radost FX (see the Radost FX article). Have a look at the programme to see if anything interests you. They have regular Free Mondays and Midweek Lounge, where entry is free.

Almost whenever I go for walk in Stromovka park (read the Stromovka article), I end up in Wakata. After healthy walk my body needs some refreshments, my ears need to defrost, and their bar is pleasantly equipped for such occasions. The barmen are always nice, even though it sometimes takes some time before you are served. But who wants to hurry from here? (By the way, dogs are welcome, as in many Prague places.)

True is that I like this bar all year long. It is my anchor in Prague 7 – one of few, scattered all over Prague. So when come in and enjoy this place carved deep in Prague`s DJ history.

Have you ever wondered, where the modern black-light theatre began? In Prague you can visit the building, that was made exclusively for Laterna Magika, the new multimedia format introduced in 1958 in Brussels. There is a still a play made for that occasion – Wonderful Circus.

Bulding itself, formerly known as Laterna Magika, now as Nová scéna of the National Theatre, was finally finished in 1983 (history). Since then it caused a lot of dispute amongst architects and public both. In short: you love or you hate it, same goes with Fred and Ginger.

From January 2010 Laterna Magika is again part of the National Theatre. Today it is an open space for modern theatre and dance events, which often include multimedia effects. If you happen to be here when 420People dances there, don`t miss it.

But if you don`t have time for evening performance, visit the NoNa café at the 2nd floor (check the article about NoNa).

My favourite club to go out with friends. It happens quite often that some of my friends has a birthday party there or I visit some of the concerts as a photographer.

It’s not only the dance club which is on the minus first floor, there is a lively bar on the ground floor and a “Live underground” concert room or the minus second floor.

I like the design of the place, each floor has its own specific features. For photos, feel free to look here. Sometimes the bar gets quite crowded and it’s not easy to find a place to sit. A lot of foreigners come there but I think they mostly aren’t tourists, probably students or people who moved to Prague.

La Fabrika has shone like the Bethlehem star in the field of art for a couple of years now. A free space for art that is contemporary but comprehensible for a broader public.

La Fabrika does not have a static group of artists, so it is truly a „free space”, as it calls itself. I love to go there see some dance or to modern classical music. There are also all kinds of visual art and other multimedia events. The scope of La Fabrika is really broad and always interesting.

For those who like modern cirkus and performance, one of the most inrteresting projects will be Up End Down or La Putyka.

This tearoom is very dear to me. Perhaps also because I had the possibility to work there and get to know the person who runs the place.

I like it mainly because its atmosphere, the tone of the colors the walls are painted with and the style in which the tearoom is furnished. And of course, not to be missed! It is situated in the tower. So after two cups of the finest tea it is hard to say if it is the height of the mysterious tower or the tea that you are feeling.

The tearoom also serves as a library so you can enjoy your tea with some of the books they offer (some of them are in English).

The Tearoom in the Tower also has really good prices compared to other tearooms in Prague. So if you don’t mind going a little out of the city center, you will not be disappointed.

The Tearoom in the Tower serves sushi but I can also recommend their simple bread with bean spread and vegetables. It is delicious!
