Baba Prague (by Tomáš Jungwirth)

In the very north of Prague, quite near the place I live, there is a very nice spot. It is a hill called „Baba” (”a grandma” :-) ). You can easily get there by tram No. 20 to the terminal stop „Podbaba” and then walk up the hill. Also, it is possible to take the bus line 131 from the stop Hradčanská, get out at „U Matějě” (where there is a fancy church with a cemetery) and then walk north-west. It is a very nice walk through the woods of „Divoká Šárka“.

The hill has an interesting history. For instance, according to archaeologists, it has been inhabited since the stone age. Up on it you will find a strange ruin. Surprisingly enough, its history is not confirmed. There are several theories – the widest-spread claims that it is a former wine-press built in 1622. Another says that it is a regular building newly-built at the beginning of the 19th century, other that it used to be chapel. No matter which of them is true, it is a nice spot which is even lit at night.

From there you can see a large part of Prague that you won’t enjoy anywhere else (for instance the sewage plant on the largest island at Vltava in Prague). The park around is a great place for sports or chilling out. If you prefer to walk, follow the red tourist sign, which will lead you to the forests of Divoká Šárka. Enjoy!

Chotkovy sady Prague (by Filip Grimm)

This is one of my favourite places for going out for a picnic, walk and sometimes even a photo shoot. The location is very convenient, just one stop from Metro Malostranská and one stop from the Prague Castle by tram 22.

The park area was established in 1833. From the very beginning it was meant to serve the people and was open to public, which was quite extraordinary. Most of the park areas and gardens in Prague were in possession of the nobility by then and nobody else was allowed there. Chotkovy sady (Chotek’s gardens) was the first park open to everybody.

In the middle of the garden there is a marble sculpture embedded in a huge rock. It is the monument of Julius Zeyer, a Czech writer. In front of the sculpture you can find a romantic little pond, very beautiful especially in autumn, when it reflects all the colors of fallen leaves.

Another exceptional thing about this garden is its panorama of Prague. You can sit down on a bench and watch the indescribable beauty from above. I recommend early morning and the sunset time :) In winter the view can be improved by the snowy topping on the roofs.

How to get there? Just take the tram 22 from Malostranská and go one stop up the hill – get off at Královský letohrádek. Then go a bit back along the tram line and turn right to enter the garden.

Hostinec u Černého vola Prague (by Filip Grimm)

This is a pub with a perfect location. I suppose every visitor of Prague intends, sooner or later, to visit the Prague castle. Well, this spot is only a 10 minute walk from there and definitely worth (not only) seeing!

The area of the Castle is quite big and it takes some time to see it, moreover when you decide to visit some of the indoor stuff. A quick refreshment afterwards seems to be very convenient then :) Cerný vul (Black bull) is an old-fashioned Prague pub, but don’t expect any touristic fancy stuff – you will only find one room with narrow wooden benches to sit and heavy wooden tables to put your beer down. However it is said to serve the best dark beer in Prague and its atmosphere is unique.

Around lunchtime you will find here at least several people with suits and ties – most probably employees of the near Ministry of Foreign Affairs coming to have their meal. In the evening it usually gets a bit crowded (by locals mostly) and it may occur that there won’t be any more places to sit. You can still have one “nastojáka” (= on the feet).

As for quality of the service, the beer is simply great here. The staff consists of two usually kind of grumpy guys, but they simply fit there. The variety of meals isn’t very wide but they have all you need to eat with a beer (sausages, pickled Camembert, toasts…). I know this is not a healthy diet but it is delicious and hungry you won’t be!

Kabinet Prague (by Vladimír Kotal)

Dejvice is not located in center of Prague, but if you happen to arrive in the area of A metro line final station Dejvická, there is a hidden little gem to find. Café Kabinet – as the name suggests – is specially decorated in the style of school cabinets – or to be precise, covering the whole history of schooling since late 19th century and high schools of the Austrian empire.

The place creates an atmosphere of days which had been gone, old furniture is combined with lot of crazy items, the place is divided with an upper floor as a hideout for debaters and downstairs resides the bar.

You can chat long hours with a stable supply of good wine (no beer on tap!), if you don’t mind the fact the place is full of cigarette smoke. You know, European intellectuals don’t really care that much about their health. One of the good points are cakes and toast sandwiches – worth a try!

They also have a strange DIY magazine covering underground cultural events on Prague 6 (some of them happen directly in Kabinet), so if you’re lucky, there might be something going on!

Na Urale Prague (by Tomáš Jungwirth)

Dejvice are a very unique part of Prague. One could even say that they are a „city inside a city”, you can find there everything you need for life. There are shops, restaurants, bars, parks, woods… As I moved there half a year ago, I started discovering the secrets of this city quarter. The Dejvice locals showed me quite a lot of nice places (Check this link for other nice Dejvice pubs) – Restaurace na Urale above all of them.

The name comes from the name of the street „Uralská” (most of the streets and lanes in downtown Dejvice are called after some war heroes or Russian places or people). It is a restaurant but lots of locals just go there for a beer. They offer the traditional Gambrinus and Pilsen beer for very reasonable prices. The service is usually very compliant, even so much that you will probably get a new beer before even finishing the previous. Call it weird, we consider it an advantage. :-)

The menu offers a rich traditional Czech cuisine. I can recommend ordering for instance some of the „bramboráks” (sort of potato-pancake). Also, you should try their pear brandy, they even put bits of pear in it and it is just soo tasty! :)
