This place is a little hard to find as you have to go through a tunnel, but if you really want to experience a traditional Albanian tavern, this is it. Most people in that area will know about the place and will be happy to guide you if you are having no luck finding it.
Gjakova Tavern is the perfect place to drink rakia, beer, and consume ridiculous amounts of cheese and grilled meat. The terms vegetarian and vegan are an alien concept in this tavern and you will have no luck if you are not an omnivore. Furthermore, smoking inside is permitted, so do be prepared.
Old Albanian music and loud chatter amongst happy drunk customers is what pervades the dim and smokey atmosphere. This restaurant is mostly frequented by older Albanian men, who certainly enjoy drinking and occasionally singing together.
I personally always ask the staff for food suggestions. Almost without fail they recommend a salad or meze to compliment my rakia, followed by an insanely big combined meat platter. The food is good and so is the homemade rakia, but the portions are enormous so I’ve never managed to completely finish the food they serve.
There is no need to call for reservation, but the place can be overcrowded, especially in the weekends. Most people tend to frequent this place after 20:00.
