Often times when I have foreign friends over visiting Prishtina, they end up complaining about the lack of souvenir shops and other ‘locally-made’ things that would be interesting to buy. Well, I hereby apologize to all my foreign friends who went through that because I hadn’t thought of Rakovica before…
If you’re looking for something that blends Albanian tradition & classical designs with modern tones, then you’ve got yourself a winner!
A family-owned business, with filigree tradition for 35 years, Rakovica makes and sells stunningly unique accessories. All pieces are handmade, and the designs are truly beautiful. My friends once got me a dragonfly pendant for my birthday, and I absolutely loved it. I’ve had it for years and it has not stained or rusted at all. Rakovica works with silver, so every jewelry piece is silver and made with the technique of filigree.
The first Rakovica store opened in 1983. Now it is located in the city center, and the store is so cozy. Inside, besides accessories, you can also find knitted socks, little wooden placards of rockstars, decades-old weapons hanging on the wall together with Certificates of Appreciation awarded by the United States Embassy in Kosovo. Oh, another important thing: Rakovica has the original version of the Kosovo Bride picture, which was chosen as Photo of the Day by National Geographic back in 2013.
Go and take a look, you will not be disappointed!
