Kalnciema kvartāls (Kalnciema Quarter in English) is a must-see spot on the left bank of River Daugava in a part of Riga called Āgenskalns. The beautiful, renovated wooden buildings give a fantastic insight into what this area looked like at the end of the 19th century. Although it is located right next to a very busy street, as soon as you are inside, it feels quiet and peaceful.
Kalnciema kvartāls is the cultural hotspot of this part of Riga. Every Thursday evening from May till September it hosts open air concerts that serve as a meeting place for hundreds of people who just want to spend the warm summer evenings listening to good music and enjoying refreshing drinks together with friends. Visitors can also visit a food and crafts market during the concerts.
Every Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00 there is a market that has become a favorite for both locals and visitors. It is an opportunity to meet with local farmers and craftsmen, talk with them, taste local food and probably buy something unique to take home with you.
The spot also hosts a restaurant, an art gallery and a wine shop (Mon – Sat 12:00 – 22:00). It is definitely worth it to visit this hidden gem of Āgenskalns!
