There is a small part of Riga that is called the Silent centre – my favourite part of Riga. One street in particular – Alberta street. The unofficial name (Silent centre) fits the place perfectly, while at the same time being extremely misleading!
First of all, whenever you get to the Silent centre of Riga (or the Centre of Art Nouveau) you’ll be stunned, mouth hanging open (so your ability to speak is limited and the place is rather silent) – by the amazing and rich architecture of ornaments, statues of people, animals and plants. These will keep you busy for some time.
In the three years I was studying in the Silent centre, I always got the impression that I was walking there for the first time – every time I noticed something beautiful I had not seen before.
The interesting thing is that all the action is kept inside the buildings. This is the misleading part of the name – the Silent centre is not that silent once you get into the buildings. There are 2 universities, a college, many amazing cafes, embassies and countless offices in just a few blocks. The calm facade actually hides a strenuous and fun life.
Finally, the silent center is surrounded by three beautiful parks, which offer you a smell and look of nature at its best seasonal look, when getting to the Silent center. Just like in a song. It’s so peaceful until… you fall in love!
