Valtera Restorāns (in translation – Walter’s Restaurant) located at the heart of Riga Old Town is a restaurant that kind of feels like home. Its bright and simple interior resembles the look of the traditional Latvian countryside houses and supplemented by the Latvian landscape paintings it provides an authentic atmosphere.
Valtera Restorāns chef Valters Zirdziņš describes it as “Simplicity and sincerity. Without glamor and snobbery.” and the restaurant lives up to this idea completely. The dishes are the combination of the best that Latvian nature has to offer – fish, berries, milk, vegetables, meat, fruit – and it all comes from Latvia’s local food suppliers.
The restaurant’s menu changes with the seasons and new recipes are introduced as soon as there are new fruits and vegetables on the farms and new hunting and fishing season has started. An absolute must-have is their homemade ice cream. My advice – try the camomile ice cream with lingonberry – apple sauce – it will definitely be a new ice cream eating experience. In addition try some local wines or the amazing apple cider.
Valtera Restorāns is the first in Latvia that offers a contemporary Latvian cuisine based only on Latvian rural products so it’s certainly worth visiting.
