Amoroma Rome (by Sabrina Favoriti)

This is a new place in Ponte Milvio, and with its innovative design and a staff committed to customer service, you can only have but a good experience, even if the place is pretty small.

It is open in the morning so you can enjoy coffee, then at around noon, you will notice young professionals and students for a quick lunch break. But the real beauty of this place is during the evening for happy hour time and later, since it is open until 02:00.

I like to go a little early, maybe around 20:00 on Wednesdays to break from the week routine and enjoy some couscous with my Cuba libre or a good glass of red wine.

In fact Wednesdays is the evening in which it receives more clientele, so you do not have to wait for the weekend to enjoy this place, and the area is not as crowded as in the weekends.

A wonderful thing about this place is that if you are an early riser, they are open at 6:00 A.M and you can enjoy a morning coffee and croissant and the silence before the chaos!

Antiqueria Rome (by Mariaceleste de Martino)

Vintage bijoux and other 1960/70s objects such as hair grips and claws and accessories, armchairs, lamps, chandeliers and other pieces of furniture. I highly recommend you to visit this shop. You may want to take back home a piece of History.

Raffaella Poncini is a refined lady and a born antiquarian. She has lived among rare and precious objects since she was a child and she has created a successful career thanks to her family heirlooms and her innate knowledge and passion for ancient art and archeology. A life dedicated to deep and attentive study on fine art. “Things that are able to survive through centuries and different epoques can be easily adaptable to our everyday modern lifestyle and homes, hence they continue on living forever”, Raffaella told me when I first visited her art gallery shop. With a big smile on her elegant face she showed me around, explaining details and history of each piece: I was struck by a dainty 17th century night-table with a precious craquelure and the vintage bijoux by US designers such as Jomaz, Shreiner and Kenneth J. Lane who made jewelry for Jackie Kennedy and Hollywood stars. In the picture, a collection of vintage bijoux, including 1970s Chanel necklaces.

It is stirring to see an ancient piece survive and resuscitate after having gone through the sufferings of life.”Sometimes I find objects that have been mistreated and kept in dark dusty cellars, and by restoring them I bring them around”, Raffaella’s eyes brighten when she explains that each object in her shop is carefully chosen and delicately repaired. All is absolutely original and certified.

Bar Gelateria Duse Rome (by Mariaceleste de Martino)

I have been coming here since I was 13 years old. I’ll never forget Marcello who used to make me the biggest and most delicious ice-cream cones, adding a cherry on top and an extra flavor, yet he never ever charged me more money for it. We used to laugh, he used to call me with my nickname, “Carota”, he was an extremely nice guy.

I still come here because they make one of the best ice-creams in Rome. The place has always been famous for the “double whipped cream”: first, twirled down the empty cone, then on top of the ice-cream scoops.

Pick the different types of chocolate ice-cream, the stracciatella, or any fruit flavor. They all taste natural because they are home-made and the ingredients are natural, far from chemical

It’s a family-run small place. Giovanni (”doppia panna”) gets its name from one of the eldest family members. It is absolutely far from being a touristic place. Actually, it’s a niche for few, mainly people living in the neighborhood, although it is quite famous within the circle of the northern part of Rome. It is a meeting point for teenagers, but also for business men who want to take an easy kind of break far from crowded cafés or restaurants. After all, Italian ice-cream is considered as nutritious as a full meal. Good, all year round.

Caffè delle Arti Rome (by Mariaceleste de Martino)

It overlooks piazzale Belle Arti where the Museum of Modern Art is, opposite Villa Borghese.

The cook is German, and this may make you laugh because Germans aren’t usually well-known as being good chefs. But this one, is probably married to an Italian lady or knows what the Italian palate is familiar with. Last time, I went there with my mother, I had a delicious provola cheese and champagne risotto as my first course. She took a risotto with asparagus and mollusks.

Then, we both went on with Rombo fish as a second course and potatoes and porcini mushrooms as a sidedish. Our lunch started at 13:00 and at 15:00 we were still half way.

The Italian siesta is particularly long on non-working days. So, we thought we could go on at least to half past three and pick a cherry-marmelade homemade pie to pave our way out from gastronomic Paradise towards relaxing Villa Borghese for a rest in the park.

By the way, you may happen to sit next to a TV or movie celebrity.

Cassamortaro Rome (by Mariaceleste de Martino)

It is renown for the patate al cartoccio, its speciality: crusty and crispy potatoes baked in a carton roll. I come to eat to this restaurant especially for this delicious side dish. The rest of the food is extremely good, including the pizza.

This restaurant is a little difficult to find because it is hidden behind the freeway (tangenziale) and it is on a narrow street parallel to a wide boulevard called Corso di Francia. On the same road where it is located there is a series of restaurants, one after the other on the same sidewalk, and by the way, they are all worth it.

The place, mainly frequented by the neighborhood inhabitants, is located in a residential area right at the other end of the famous Ponte delle aquile (bridge of the eagles), a white large bridge made of travertine marble, enormous statues, lamps and sculptures built in the Fascist period. It is an upper-class area of town. Indoors and outdoors.

Duke's Rome (by Mariaceleste de Martino)

Forget the glamorous Hollywood or the luxurious shopping Rodeo Drive and relax in peaceful and spacious West Coast vineyards like Napa Valley.

Duke’s is a California Bar & Restaurant. It’s in Rome’s snobby-snotty neighborhood. The atmosphere is elegant thus easy-going, and the wines are mostly from California. The food too, especially the thick and juicy beef steaks.

Unluckily you won’t be surrounded by any ranch-type kind of guy, no blond, tall studs and none of the Blondy Barbies you would meet strolling down LA. But whether you are a man or a woman you won’t be disappointed.

It’s a trendy high class place, the clientele is sophisticated, good-looking, well-dressed, the creme of the city. And the waiters are all very polite, professional, handsome, and they always smile. This makes my evening even more pleasant and relaxing. One must please not only the palate, but also the eye!

It is the perfect place for me to be, either for a drink or a bite, during warm and cold seasons: there are also tables outdoors, all year round, in a pebbled-paved garden warmed up by mushroom-shaped gas heaters.

Enso Sushi Restaurant Rome (by Sabrina Favoriti)

As a fan of Asian food and in particular Japanese food I picked this restaurant to enjoy a nice dinner with a few friends and I was pleasantly surprised.

The place has normal tables as well as tatami tables but it only gives you an illusion of sitting on the floor because you will sit down and there is a “hole” or space to place your legs.

We enjoyed some Asian beers and some Ume sushi which is a plate with different sushi’s and for my friends that were not sushi lovers they also had a Malayan side of the menu and so we ordered some Malayan beef.

Fratelli La Bufala Rome (by Emiliano)

Fratelli La Bufala (FLB) is a chain which has branches in all over the world. It’s famous because you can eat buffalo-based dishes: not only the classical mozzarella, but also the buffalo meat!

In Rome there are 3 restaurants which offer same food but have different prices due to their position: I suggest to go to restaurant in Via Velletri because it’s the best trade-off between price and location.

I like this place because of the quality of food which I think is very high: in fact both if you eat pizza or if you eat meat: your tastebuds will definitely be satisfied!

As buffalo mozzarella lover I suggest pizza, but also the grill cooked buffalo meat is good, especially when it’s accompanied with focaccia

At the end of the meal order “tortino di cioccolato” (chocolate cake) – your taste will thank you for a long time…

Unfortunately the restaurant has 2 bad things: a long line if you don’t book in advance, and waiters are not very kind and too busy during rush hour.

Gran Madre di Dio Rome (by Sabrina Favoriti)

Churches are a popular attraction for tourists and there are so many that it is almost impossible to see all of them in one visit. Of course there are the more popular ones and the Sistine Chapel, but there are also lesser known ones like this on in the piazzale of Ponte Milvio with great architecture from the early 1930’s. This chapel was requested by Pope Pius XI in 1931.

I like visiting Churches mainly for their art and architecture. Each church has a different story inside. Once you go inside this one, you will notice right in front of you a statue of the Virgin Mary holding Jesus and in front of the statue to your left Jesus on the Cross.

This Church is not a popular tourist attraction but it is worth it. Afterwards, you can go to one of the many bars that surround the area for either a cup of coffee or a glass of wine!

Grande Moschea di Roma Rome (by Fabio Fontanella and Lalupa)

To visit a mosque in the city of St. Peter’s? In the heart of Christianity? In the Mecca of Catholicism? Yes. A trip to Rome’s Great Mosque will give you a chance to admire a sublime piece of contemporary architecture and catch a glimpse of Rome’s growing Muslim community.

Rome’s Great Mosque is the largest in Europe, covering an area of over 30,000 squared meters, with the ability to hold thousands of worshipers. It is also the seat of the Islamic Cultural Center, one of the most important in Europe, housing a library and an Arabic language school.

Built with (mostly) Saudi money and inaugurated in 1995, it is a great example West meets East in terms of architecture. The materials used to construct it are local stones such as travertino, piperino and bricks, which give it those light orange tones reminiscent of many baroque Roman buildings you would find in the historic center. The sinuous-shaped pillars, typical of Islamic architecture, remind one of a gothic cathedral or perhaps of trees in a forest.

Now for the dilemma: if you wish to tour the interior and admire the great architectural prowess of Paolo Portoghesi & colleagues, you should go there on Wednesday or Saturday mornings, when the mosque opens to tourists. If, on the other hand, you wish to take a look at the goods on sale in the open-air market right before the entrance, the day to go is Fridays, when the mosque is bustling with activity.

I Butteri Rome (by Emiliano Durante)

Once you arrive in Piazza Regina Margherita, probably you’ll get confused because you’ll find two restaurants named “I Butteri”, each on opposite sides of the street: don’t worry, you are not drunk!

The fact is that I Butteri had such as requests in the past years that the owners decided to buy another place in the same square!

I Butteri is obviously originated from Tuscany, so if you love the Maremma, this is the right place for you, and even the furniture, very distinctive, recalls those areas.
Due to it is a typical Tuscan restaurant, is the undisputed kingdom of the high quality “tagliata” and “fiorentina”, even if you can also order pizza, that however is always good; on the right side of the restaurant there’s a big window on the kitchen, where you can see the butchers who cut and prepare the meat to be cooked, and it’s funny to watch them while you wait for your order.

For the starters I really suggest “prosciutto toscano” and “salame di cinghiale”, but don’t forget to taste the typical local bread and focaccia. They are simply gorgeous!

Il Caminetto Rome (by Mariaceleste de Martino)

It’s one of my favorite places, because I know I’ll always eat well. An elegant family-run restaurant since 1959. A classic Italian place in an upper class neighborhood where you can have excellent food at a very good price. I dine here since I was a teenager and I have always eaten very well.

The other day, I went with my mother and had a zucchini strudel with provola cheese as an appetizer. It was delicious. My mom had Spinach rolls with Parmisan. Then we went for pasta: Amatriciana and Checca. We ended our dinner with a fruit salad, not the usual smooshed fruit cut in tiny pieces, but big juicy slices of fruit: kiwi, apple, melon, strawberry, pear, banana, grapes.

If you come by car there is a parking place right across the street, or you can leave it parked second row – loudspeakers will call out your name if you are blocking another vehicle. The staff is professional and elegantly dressed. Outdoors and Indoors, very spacious.

It’s always packed so make sure you book. You will not find a menu in English, but learning some Italian will not do you harm and can be fun. After all, this is not a typical touristic place.

Jarro Rome (by Sabrina Favoriti)

Inside this winebar it’s quite dark and you may think “this is it?” because of the tiny dimensions of the wine bar.

But there is a vast list of wines, both Italian and International and beers (try the “birra piemontese” for a refreshing taste). It is a great place to go have “happy hour”.

If you feel claustrophobic inside, there are always plenty of tables outside to sit and chat with friends and enjoy the soft House music. I like sitting outside especially during the spring and summer months to have a drink and watch people.

La Pariolina Rome (by Emiliano Durante)

In the heart of the posh Parioli area and just few meters far from Auditorium, there is this nice restaurant where, except of the fish, you can eat whatever kind of food you want.

After you taste the starters, choosing between fried food, hams and cheese, you can decide if you want to order just a pizza (my favorite is “Pizza La Pariolina”) cooked in “Napoli’s way” (thick) or “Roma’s way” (thin) as you prefer, get a pasta or taste one of the amazing steaks made with meat from Tuscany.

Here you can get wonderful steaks, and I really suggest large grilled beef steak or, if you want to share with people at your table or you are very hungry the grilled bison steak.

They also have a great selection of drinks: there are more than 90 kinds of Italian wines and beers from every part of Europe, particularly Italy, Germany and Belgium.

Lucantoni Rome (by Mariaceleste de Martino)

Italian pop singers and actors buy wine here. Rome’s top class hotels order cases of different kind of wine and champagne here for their clientele. And, I buy wine and delicacies here, too. You can find what you want, all kinds of wines from all over the world, from everyday wine at reasonable prices and good quality, to exclusive €2000,00+ a bottle wine.

I came here the first time for a wine tasting, rather a champagne tasting: three vintages by Veuve Clicquot, my favorite French Champagne. There is a little space indoor and outdoor dedicated to these events. You can compare a number of wines and judge the quality by tasting it yourself or be guided by an expert.

Wine, obviously served in appropriate wineglasses and at the right temperature, will come along with tarts and matching finger food that best exalts its taste. The most precious wine is kept in wine coolers and cellars.

This place is located in Ponte Milvio and it is a very popular gelateria, it has a vast outdoors for you to sit down and enjoy your gelato or pastries.

The place established itself in Rome since 1959, and to this day they still use fresh ingredients for both their gelatos and their pastries.

They have different flavors such as the “indispensabile” which is a mixture of raspberry and nutella and other interesting flavors.

This is a excellent place to hang-out during an afternoon and eat ice-cream, it is very family oriented.

Ponte Milvio Rome (by Emiliano Durante)

Ponte Milvio is one the most ancient bridges of Rome. It was built on a point where the ancient roads Via Cassia and Via Flaminia joined to allow to cross the river Tiber.

The bridge is famous for 3 reasons: the first is that every Sunday in the area under the bridge and along the Tiber there’s a big market of antique stuff; the second is that, on the tower of the bridge there’s a door which you can use to go upstairs and visit the inside exposition, which changes very often and is not advertised anywhere.

The third and most known reason of the importance of Ponte Milvio is that’s the place of roman lovers! After the roman author Federico Moccia wrote his book “Tre metri sopra il cielo” in 1992 and published only in 2004, where the protagonists promise themselves eternal love locking a padlock on the central lamp of the bridge and throwing the key in the Tiber.

Many young Romans and people from other parts of Italy have come here to lock their padlocks to the central lamp of the bridge and to promise eternal love.

This loving ritual was so successful that in 2007 the lamp broke in the middle and fell down for the excessive weight of the padlocks!!! Nowadays the broken lamp was replaced with new lamp and now is forbidden to lock padlocks to the lamp, but just in front of it there is a long chain where you can lock your padlock and promise eternal love to your sweetheart….

Ponte Milvio Mall Rome (by Sabrina Favoriti)

In the heart of Ponte Milvio there’s a brand new mall. The “originality” of this shopping mall is the fruit, vegetables and meat markets. These markets used to be on the streets and have been there for decades but with the opening of the mall they have been transferred inside. So rain or shine, people can still go grocery shopping and do some personal shopping as well.

During the summer it is nice because the mall is air conditioned, and during the winter months it will be a nice distraction from the rain. The first time I ran into the mall was during the atrocious heat in the month of August. A friend and I had a drink and did some nice shopping in the mall nearby.

ReD Rome (by Mariaceleste de Martino)

When there are good musical events in town the best program is at the Auditorium Parco della Musica, where acoustics mean something, whether classical or pop.

It’s relatively a new construction, designed by famous Italian architect Renzo Piano. It looks like three enormous cockroaches.

Next to it, under a portico, lies this elegant restaurant. I like it because it’s in an area surrounded by trees and gardens so the temperature in the Summer is cool. You can sit outdoors also during winter months thanks to mushroom-shaped gas heaters that keep it warm.

It’s stylish and you’ll feel like a Star and you’ll probably end up eating next to one of the musicians, singers or dancers that have just finished their show. The first time I went there, I met the cast of dancers and actors of the Montalvo-Hervieu company. Sitting next to me was one of the hip hop dancers, a smart French young man who, after performing for over two hours on stage, still had the energy to entertain us with his funky arm-leg-head movements.

Another special evening here was after seeing milestone Joe Jackson concert. That evening, I ate the best fried mozzarella and vegetable pie.

This is also a popular venue in the North Rome area. It’s illuminated by candlelight, and has ethnic furniture, sofas and puffs. The atmosphere is warm and laid-back, where you can meet old friends and create new ones, where you can chat away in the corner seated on a puff or sofa.

It is more of a cocktail bar but they do have a Mediterranean kitchen too. They have a good wine list but the preferred drinks are martinis or even champagne.

But what makes this wine bar interesting is that a lot of the items that you see are actually for sale! If you like their leopard print dishes, you can take them home!

Rossopomodoro Rome (by Mariaceleste de Martino)

I had a pizza the first time I ate here with a colleague from Saxa Rubra, the media center where I work. It is great! The pizza, naturally. The pizza is juicy, tasty, fresh, just what a pizza should taste like. And they know what “pizza” means. The chef and the staff are from southern Italy, where food has Sun in it, where food is colored, where nothing in your plate will be dull and pale.

Cross over the White Eagle bridge and right at the end of it you will find yourself in a high class area called Fleming. On the left hand side of the main boulevard you will find this restaurant, right under the overpass. I have never seen a tourist in this neighborhood, so this guarantees the quality of the food: why should the wealthy inhabitants of this neighborhood ever want to eat bad food. You wouldn’t either, right?

The area also offers ancient sites, such as the nearby Ponte Milvio, the marble stadium and the Flaminio stadium where rugby matches are usually held. But, good food is the main attraction of this part of town.

Stadio Olimpico Rome (by Emiliano Durante)

The Olympic Stadium of Rome is the place where AS Roma and SS Lazio play their home matches of Serie A and UEFA European Cups.

If you go to watch a match, you have the opportunity to see some of the best players in the world: wonderful players like Francesco Totti, who won World Cup 2006, play for AS Roma. He’s one of Italian football legends of all times and one of the symbols of AS Roma, just like Daniele De Rossi and Simone Perrotta, who both won World Cup 2006 as well, and other great international players.

Then there are some good players also in Ss Lazio, like for example the argentinian forwards Mauro Zarate and Julio Ricardo Cruz.

If you wanna buy ticket, you can buy them in As Roma Store or Lazio point or more easily in tobacco shops (here you are sellers’list)

About places where to seat, remember that during As Roma’s matches the sector “Curva Sud” is always sold out because it’s the place of the hardcore fans (Ss Lazio’s hardcore fan sector is “Curva Nord” , but you can easily find tickets for it) and a nice trade-off between cheap ticket and nice view are the sectors “Distinti” or “Tribuna Tevere Laterale”.

To reach the stadium, the easiest way is to take red metro line until Flaminio, then tram number 2 until the last stop in Piazza Mancini, from where you have to walk for 500 metres to reach the entrance.

Torretta Valadier Rome (by Sabrina Favoriti)

This is one of Rome’s unknown gems because not many people know that the tower that is on the bridge is actually a small museum/art gallery.

You are able to see different types of arts and sometimes there are special events or a different variety of artists, but in the cases of events you may even find that every Sunday during a specific month you can enjoy wine tasting, not to mention the fantastic view from up there!

When I have visitors from out of the country or even the city I make sure to bring them here because it is such a surprise for people to know that the tower is also a museum. As a matter of fact, I actually recently went to a wine tasting event with a friend that has been living in Rome all her life and she did not know about it.

Villa Balestra Rome (by Mariaceleste de Martino)

I need a break between a dash and a sprint across heavy traffic. I relax here, in this small, public park with a breathtaking view. It is being restored, so it will soon be even nicer.

Wealthy families’ live-in nannies go there to stroll with babies in prams and walk their dogs. But it is also a teenage meeting point. The neighborhood youngsters have a drink and a drag together right after school while they show off their latest fashionable sunglasses or gold and steel Rolex. And they lazily kick a soccer ball to one another just to fraternize. Welcome to open-air Vogue.

At the end of this small green patch of grass, there’s a café. Go for a milk shake or a frappè, a salty croissant with prosciutto or a deluxe gelato Italian creamy ice-cream), whatever you pick is good.

If you need the toilet, ask the barman at the café: he keeps the keys to a private bathroom in the back. I like relaxing on one of the benches and watch the trees sway to the wind and observe busy ants working laboriously under my feet. Instead of an i-pod I enjoy listening to the birds chirping, eagerly trying to grab the crumbs of my tramezzino (Italian sandwich) falling from my mouth, or maybe a pedigreed Bulldog will snort at me craving for the last bite of my snack or a pug wanting to lick what remains of my frappè.

I sometimes take a nap like an élite clochard and wake up to the barking of a Jack Russell panting after a ball rolling passed my bench.
