MAS is a very big shop situated on one of the corners of Piazza Vittorio, a multicultural area in the centre of Rome. Its name, MAS, is not the Spanish word used to say “more”, even if you could find almost everything in it, but it’s the acronym of Magazzini Allo Statuto. Statuto is the name of the street where this five floor shop is located.
MAS, born in the beginning of the last century, has seen all the developments of the Roman people’s habits during the past decades and, when I cross the entrance door, I can feel and see all of them. Every now and then, they say it’s going to close but it is still open, even if it’s not anymore full of stuff as it was in the past.
When I walk in it is a bit sad because there are a lot of empty shelves and closed areas that I keep on picture crowded and full as they were. Anyway you can still find a lot of different things in it: from military clothes to useless kitchen objects. I used to go there if I wanted to buy a strange and cheap present for a funny friend, or if I wanted an idea for an unconventional gift or for a carnival costume. Most of all, now they have a huge amount of old clothes, for women and men and I keep on finding something that I’d like to buy, even just for fun!
