I discovered the amazing Palombi-Oasi della Birra very close to the apartment I had been living in for a short period, some years ago, and actually fell in love with it!
The location itself is adorable: a paved square where once the local market of Testaccio was, recently converted into a sort of open playground, with the restored Fontana delle Anfore (the Amphora is the symbol of this neighborhood) moved back to its original location.
One of the things I like most about Palombi is that it changes aspect, and customers, during the course of the day. A wine, beer and gourmet food store in the daytime, definitely a restaurant in the evening (with a pre-dinner parenthesis, when a large buffet for the aperitivo is served: selection of cold meats, cheeses, vegetables, pasta, and so forth!). This is indeed an oasis for wine and food lovers where – needless to say – a huge selection of bottled beers is available too!
Sitting at their outdoor tables is great during summertime, but a reservation is strongly advised, unless you want to stand in line for a while. I personally prefer to have a seat inside Palombi, whose interior is a maze of small rooms, with tables standing against the shelves where bottles and fine food products are lined up all together. Once there, you just have to lift your eyes from the menu to have plenty of choice for your order!
Few minutes walk from Piramide metro station (Line B – Blue).
