I love to go to markets. Not only vintage or antique markets, but the markets where the inhabitants of a city go to buy everything they need. This market is the real thing, the real Rotterdam. The tourist office will send you to the Market Hall (check the Markthal article), a genuine tourist magnet. But if you want to see the people of Rotterdam in all their multi-ethnic beauty you have to go to the Afrikaander market on Wednesday or Saturday.
Turkish and Moroccan food, Indian clothes and dresses, Surinamese vegetables and groceries, if you are looking for something exotic you will find it here. Rotterdam can boast around 127 different nationalities in its population, and if you want to get a glimpse of this, just look around you on the Afrikaander Plein.
Rotterdam is a world port but also a melting pot of cultures, and the place to meet different cultures is here. I love to walk around here and wonder what the products sold are and of course I am not afraid to ask if I don’t know.
