In the lively Middellandstraat in the heart of Oude Westen you’ll find one of the nicest fish shops of the city, Andaluce. I have the advantage of almost living around the corner which makes it an easy walk to get my weekly dose of fish. I go there almost every Saturday and with over 150 fish species I sometimes have a hard time choosing. I wouldn’t be surprised if you find the same amount of nationalities among the clients since there is a very international atmosphere.
The name of the place refers to Al-Andalus, the medieval Moorish domination of the Iberian Peninsula and it’s ran by a couple of Moroccans. You can get typical Dutch fish like Hollandse nieuwe (Dutch herring) or kibbeling (battered chunks of deep fried fish) but also a whole series of Mediterranean-style prepared seafood. There’s also a possibility to have your fish prepared in the shop and to eat in the restaurant behind the shop.
My advice: buy yourself some catch of the day, get some bread at the Turkish bakery opposite Andaluce and together with some grilled vegetables and good olive oil you can prepare yourself the perfect fishy dinner.
