When looking for a book, for myself or for a family member or friend, I always drop by “de dames van Amesz” (the ladies of Amesz), three kind ladies who seem to have read all the books they sell. They’ve run the shop since 1999 and are always able to give you advice on what to buy for whom.
Founded in 1886 by Jacobus Amesz it is still located in the stately building hired and later bought by the original founder in 1895. Although the shop is very small it is really crammed with books. Mostly in Dutch but also in English. If you are looking for a book they don’t have available they will order it for you and call you when it has arrived.
So if you want some advice or love the smell of fresh printed literature like I do, drop by in the Voorschoterlaan, take a look at the books on display in the shop window, go in and walk past the bookshelves that rise up to the ceiling. Check the new arrivals on the table upstairs and walk out with your nose in a newly acquired volume of prose or poetry.
