Café De Schouw is one of the places I recommend you to go if you like meeting local artists. Go on a Thursday evening around 20:30.
Go mingle while checking out the smallest gallery in town, “De Aanschouw”. It’s a show-window Gallery (40 x 67 x 115 cm) that is fixed next to the entrance on the facade of the writers/artist café De Schouw.
If you want to experience something local and arty, you are welcome to join the weekly CHANGE (De Wissel) of the exhibition. It always takes place in the presence of the artist on Thursday nights after 20:30.
De Schouw is an old café that used to function as a hangout for writers, journalists, artists and locals and it still does, although the newspaper’s offices moved away from the city centre. The café is now under new management – lovely bar owner Tineke and my favourite bartender here is Leo. Once in a while I go, often to check out the new art on display in the showcase on the facade and to drink a beer with fellow artists.
It can easily be missed. De Schouw and Aanschouw are on the other corner opposite the restyled café De Witte Aap, once voted to be the best bar in the world if you may believe the Lonely Planet!
