I think the the Machinist is great because it’s casual, creative and comfortable. Whether you come for dinner or just to have coffee, both are definitely worth it. The building used to be the College of Shipping and Transport and that can still be felt in its spacial structure. The restaurant room is vast, with high ceilings and an industrial air, yet at the same time it feels inviting and cosy. From May to September, when the weather is good, they open the Fish Canteen on the Cool outside on the water (check the Viskantine aan de Cool article). I definitely recommend paying that a visit, for the atmosphere is festive and happy and the food is good.
However, sustenance is not the only reason for swinging by De Machinist. There are plenty of other things on the menu too. They organise regular musical entertainment with singer-songwriters, jazz bands or classical music performances. Comedy nights and film screenings are held often too and it’s worth keeping an eye on their agenda for a lot of it is free.
