Underneath the largest bridge of Rotterdam, the Van Brienenoord bridge, lies a peaceful quiet island. The Isle of Van Brienenoord. Scottish cattle roams around here, birds are singing, trees are rustling. Only in the back can you hear the drone of the motorway as large numbers cars cross the bridge every day and night going to and from the city.
You enter the island via a small bridge on the south side. In the middle there used to be a large low building, where in the old days the children of the city used to have a holiday camp. Their parents who could not afford a holiday out of the city sent them there where they could play in nature and get some fresh air. The place is being rebuilt at the moment.
With my rock band we recorded our first CD on this island and we celebrated our tenth anniversary here as well. Last year I also celebrated my sixtieth birthday on the island. So I’ve left a lot of footprints there and it holds a lot of memories too.
The Netherlands Oil Company (Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij) has left the island too so today it is peaceful and quiet again. You can walk along the river and have a wonderful view of the city of Rotterdam.
